We’re a mid‑40s couple living in a quiet suburban neighborhood in Austin, Texas – the kind with friendly neighbors, slow evenings, and a back deck that gets the kind of sun exposure gardeners dream about. Our lease limits what we can do in the yard, so we turned the deck into a full‑blown container‑garden jungle. It’s not a sprawling farm (yet), but it’s ours, and it’s where Cattywampus Farm began.
I’m the one who plans, plots, seeds, waters, panics, adjusts, and tries again. My husband is the farm’s construction PM, foreman, crew, and whatever the title is for the person who owns that entire line of business. Honestly, at this point he’s the CEO of his own construction company – building every raised bed, shelf, trellis, and contraption I dream up. If it needs to be built, he’s already outside measuring something.
And then there are the cats.
Peanut (girl) is our muse, our chaos goblin, and the inspiration for the farm’s logo -lovingly painted by my younger daughter. The silhouette is perfect: Peanut sitting upright, looking slightly offended, radiating pure attitude. She’s a chunky loaf when she stands, but the logo captures her regal “I run this place” energy.
Luigi (boy) is our sleepy farm supervisor. He spends most of his time lying on the coffee station, staring out the window like he’s contemplating the meaning of life. Occasionally he perks up if a bird or lizard wanders into view, but mostly he’s either judging us or napping. He contributes nothing except vibes, and honestly, that’s enough.
We don’t really know what we’re doing – not in the traditional farming sense. But we have a plan, and we’re following it (or adjusting it) and seeing what happens. What else is there to do? We want a different kind of life, even if we have to stay in Austin for a handful of years before we can fully live it.
We want to grow things. Dry things. Sell things. We want chickens, ducks, goats, dirt under our nails, quiet mornings, and intentional days. We want a life that feels good – simple, slow, and ours.
Every day we get a little closer to that life. And every day, we feel a little happier than the one before.
Welcome to Cattywampus Farm. We’re glad you’re here.
