Care Guide for Central Texas (Zone 8b)
Sun Requirements
Tulsi loves heat and full sun, but in Austin’s peak summer (July-August), it performs best with morning sun and filtered afternoon shade.
It tolerates heat better than Genovese basil, but prolonged 3-7 PM direct sun can still cause leaf scorch in containers.
If your Tulsi droops dramatically in late afternoon, it’s asking for shade cloth or relocation.
Watering
Tulsi prefers even moisture – not soggy, not bone‑dry.
- Water deeply 2× per week in beds.
- Containers may need watering every 1-2 days during heat waves.
- Avoid overhead watering at night to prevent fungal issues.
- Mulch lightly to slow evaporation.
Signs of underwatering: droopy leaves that perk up after watering.
Signs of overwatering: yellowing lower leaves and soft stems.
Soil & Fertilizer (Organic‑Only)
Use a rich, well‑draining mix: compost & coconut coir & perlite.
Container tulsi basil
- Monthly diluted fish emulsion (½ strength)
- Monthly compost tea
- Monthly worm castings
- Moderate feeder; avoid heavy nitrogen to preserve aroma and medicinal qualities
- Containers dry out fast, so monthly feeding keeps growth steady without making leaves watery or bland
In‑ground tulsi basil
- Heavy nitrogen reduces essential oils and flavor intensity
- Monthly compost tea and worm castings
- Diluted fish emulsion only if growth slows
- In-ground plants often need less nitrogen because soil retains nutrients better
Organic Pest Control
Tulsi is naturally pest‑resistant, but watch for aphids, leaf miners, and spider mites.
Organic solutions:
- Neem oil at dusk (never in full sun)
- Insecticidal soap for aphids
- BT for caterpillars
- Increase airflow to prevent fungal issues
- Encourage ladybugs and lacewings
Avoid chemical pesticides – Tulsi is a pollinator magnet.
Container vs In‑Ground Care
Container Care
- 1‑gal minimum; 3‑gal for mature plants
- Terracotta helps prevent root rot
- Water more frequently than in‑ground plants
- Fertilize lightly but consistently
In‑Ground Care
- Plant in raised beds or amended soil
- Provide afternoon shade during peak summer
- Mulch lightly to retain moisture
- Watch for fire ants nesting near roots
Warnings
- Tulsi flowers quickly in extreme heat – pinch buds immediately.
- Afternoon shade improves leaf production and flavor.
Harvest Instructions
Tulsi thrives with regular harvesting.
- Pinch growing tips often to encourage bushiness.
- Harvest in the morning for best aroma.
- Never remove more than ⅓ of the plant at once.
- Remove flower buds immediately to maintain leaf production.
Frequent harvesting = stronger medicinal flavor.
Drying & Storage
Tulsi can be:
- Air‑dried in small bundles
- Dehydrated at 95-105°F
- Dried on screens for faster airflow
Store dried Tulsi in airtight jars away from sunlight.
Properly dried Tulsi keeps for 6-9 months and retains its fragrance beautifully.
