BLACK BEAUTY ZUCCHINI

Care Guide for Central Texas (Zone 8b)

Sun Requirements

  • Zucchini prefers full sun – aim for 8+ hours daily.
  • It thrives in heat but appreciates mulch to keep roots cool.
  • Avoid deep shade – it reduces flowering and fruit set.

Watering

  • Water deeply 2-3× weekly, more during heat waves.
  • Keep soil evenly moist; dry spells cause blossom drop.
  • Avoid overhead watering to reduce powdery mildew.
  • Mulch helps retain moisture and prevent soil crusting.

Soil & Fertilizer (Organic‑Only)

Use rich, well‑draining soil with plenty of compost.
Zucchini is a heavy feeder.

Container

  • Every 2 weeks alternate diluted fish emulsion (½ strength) and compost tea
  • Monthly worm castings
  • Heavy feeders; steady nutrition supports continuous flowering and fruit set
  • Too much nitrogen = lots of leaves, fewer blossoms and reduced squash production
  • Containers dry out fast, so keep moisture consistent

In‑ground

  • Every 3 weeks compost tea and worm castings
  • Diluted fish emulsion only if growth slows
  • Soil biology supports balanced nutrient uptake for long‑season production
  • Heavy nitrogen = lush foliage and fewer squash
  • Mulch well to retain moisture and prevent soil splash on leaves

Organic Pest Control

Watch for:

  • squash vine borers
  • squash bugs
  • cucumber beetles
  • aphids
  • powdery mildew

Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap at dusk.
Hand‑pick squash bugs and destroy egg clusters.
Use row covers early in the season to block vine borers.
Remove lower leaves if mildew appears.

Container vs In‑Ground Care

Container:

  • Use a 7-10 gal pot with excellent drainage.
  • Wide containers help roots spread.
  • Terracotta helps prevent soggy soil.

In‑Ground:

  • Plant in raised beds or compost‑rich soil.
  • Space plants 3 feet apart – they get big.
  • Mulch heavily to keep soil cool.
  • Consider staking or pruning for airflow.

Harvest Instructions

  • Harvest fruits at 6-8 inches for best flavor and texture.
  • Pick daily during peak season – more picking = more fruit.
  • Oversized zucchini becomes seedy and tough.
  • Cut with pruners to avoid damaging stems.

Drying & Storage

Store unwashed zucchini in a perforated bag in the fridge for 3-5 days.
For longer storage:

  • slice and freeze
  • spiralize and freeze
  • dehydrate for soups
  • bake into bread and freeze

Avoid washing until ready to cook.
