Care Guide for Central Texas (Zone 8b)
Sun Requirements
- Chocolate Cherry thrives in full sun – aim for 8+ hours daily.
- It loves heat but appreciates mulch to keep roots cool.
- Avoid deep shade – it reduces flowering and fruit set.
Watering
- Water deeply 2-3× weekly, more during heat waves.
- Keep soil evenly moist; dry spells cause blossom drop and cracking.
- Avoid overhead watering to reduce leaf disease.
- Mulch helps retain moisture and prevent soil crusting.
Soil & Fertilizer (Organic‑Only)
Use rich, well‑draining soil with plenty of compost.
Cherry tomatoes are heavy feeders.
Container
- Every 2 weeks alternate diluted fish emulsion (½ strength) and compost tea
- Monthly worm castings
- Heavy feeders; steady nutrition supports continuous flowering and fruiting
- Too much nitrogen = lots of leaves, fewer blossoms and slower ripening
- Containers dry out fast, so keep moisture consistent
In‑ground
- Every 3 weeks compost tea and worm castings
- Diluted fish emulsion only if growth slows
- Soil biology supports steady nutrient uptake for long season production
- Heavy nitrogen = lush foliage and delayed fruit set
- Mulch well to retain moisture and prevent soil splash on leaves
Organic Pest Control
Watch for:
- tomato hornworms
- spider mites
- aphids
- whiteflies
Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap at dusk.
Hand‑pick hornworms (they’re huge but harmless).
Encourage ladybugs and lacewings.
Container vs In‑Ground Care
Container:
- Use a 7-10 gal pot with excellent drainage.
- Provide a trellis or tomato cage – vines can exceed 6-7 feet.
- Terracotta helps prevent soggy roots.
In‑Ground:
- Plant in raised beds or compost‑rich soil.
- Space plants 24-36 inches apart.
- Mulch heavily to keep soil cool.
- Stake or cage early – this variety grows FAST.
Harvest Instructions
Harvest when fruits are:
- deep mahogany brown
- slightly soft
- glossy
- fully colored on the shoulders
Pick daily during peak season – more picking = more fruit.
Indeterminate – produces until frost.
Drying & Storage
Store unwashed tomatoes at room temperature for 3-5 days.
For longer storage:
- roast and freeze
- dehydrate for snacks
- make confit or jam
Avoid refrigeration – it dulls flavor.
