DANVERS CARROT

Care Guide for Central Texas (Zone 8b)

Sun Requirements

  • Carrots love full sun – aim for 6-8 hours daily.
  • Light afternoon shade helps prevent bitterness during peak summer.
  • Mulch keeps soil cool and moisture steady.

Watering

  • Water deeply 2-3× weekly depending on rainfall.
  • Keep soil evenly moist; dry spells cause woody roots.
  • Avoid overhead watering to reduce leaf disease.
  • Mulch helps retain moisture and prevent soil crusting.

Soil & Fertilizer (Organic‑Only)

Use loose, sandy loam rich in compost.
Work soil 10-12 in deep; remove rocks and clumps.

Container

  • Every 3 weeks alternate diluted fish emulsion (½ strength) and compost tea
  • Monthly worm castings
  • Root crops need steady, gentle feeding for uniform roots
  • Too much nitrogen = big leafy tops, small or forked roots
  • Containers dry out fast, so keep moisture consistent

In‑ground

  • Every 3 weeks compost tea and worm castings
  • Diluted fish emulsion only if growth slows
  • Healthy soil biology supports strong root development
  • Heavy nitrogen causes excessive tops and poor root formation

Organic Pest Control

Watch for:

  • carrot rust fly
  • aphids
  • root knot nematodes

Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap at dusk.
Use floating row covers to protect seedlings.
Encourage ladybugs and lacewings.

Container vs In‑Ground Care

Container:

  • Use a 1‑gal pot ≥ 10 in deep with drainage holes.
  • Terracotta helps prevent soggy roots.

In‑Ground:

  • Plant in raised beds or loosened soil enriched with compost.
  • Austin clay needs amendment for drainage.
  • Thin seedlings to 1-2 in apart for uniform roots.

Harvest Instructions

  • Harvest when roots reach 7-8 in and are smooth and firm.
  • Smaller carrots are sweeter and more tender.
  • Loosen soil before pulling to avoid breakage.
  • For extra sweetness, harvest after cool nights or light frost.

Drying & Storage

  • Remove tops immediately.
  • Store unwashed roots in a perforated bag in the fridge 2-4 weeks.
  • For long‑term storage: keep in damp sand in a cool cellar.
  • Avoid washing until ready to eat.
