Care Guide for Central Texas (Zone 8b)
Sun Requirements
- Roma tomatoes thrive in full sun – aim for 8+ hours daily.
- They love heat but appreciate mulch to keep roots cool.
- Avoid deep shade – it reduces flowering and fruit set.
Watering
- Water deeply 2-3× weekly, more during heat waves.
- Keep soil evenly moist; dry spells cause blossom drop and cracking.
- Avoid overhead watering to reduce leaf disease.
- Mulch helps retain moisture and prevent soil crusting.
Soil & Fertilizer (Organic‑Only)
Use rich, well‑draining soil with plenty of compost.
Paste tomatoes are moderate‑heavy feeders.
Container
- Every 3 weeks alternate diluted fish emulsion (½ strength) and compost tea
- Monthly worm castings
- Moderate feeders; steady nutrition supports uniform fruit set
- Too much nitrogen = leafy plants and smaller harvest
- Containers dry out fast, so keep moisture consistent during fruiting
In‑ground
- Every 4 weeks compost tea and worm castings
- Diluted fish emulsion only early in growth or if plants stall
- Soil biology supports balanced nutrient uptake for single main harvest
- Heavy nitrogen delays ripening and reduces fruit set
- Mulch well to maintain even moisture and protect root
Organic Pest Control
Watch for:
- tomato hornworms
- aphids
- spider mites
- whiteflies
Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap at dusk.
Hand‑pick hornworms (they’re huge but harmless).
Encourage ladybugs and lacewings.
Container vs In‑Ground Care
Container:
- Use a 10-15 gal pot with excellent drainage.
- Provide a sturdy tomato cage – Romas are determinate but still heavy.
- Terracotta helps prevent soggy roots.
In‑Ground:
- Plant in raised beds or compost‑rich soil.
- Space plants 18-24 inches apart.
- Mulch heavily to keep soil cool.
- Determinate habit = one big flush of fruit.
Harvest Instructions
Harvest when fruits are:
- deep red
- firm
- fully colored
- slightly soft at the tip
Romas ripen in clusters – harvest frequently during peak season.
Determinate plants produce most of their fruit over a few weeks.
Drying & Storage
Store unwashed tomatoes at room temperature for 3-5 days.
For longer storage:
- roast and freeze
- make sauce and freeze
- dehydrate for sun‑dried style tomatoes
Avoid refrigeration – it dulls flavor.
